Galway Co-operative Housing Development Society Ltd. currently comprises three
Rental Housing Co-operatives in Galway City
.
Types of Housing Co-operatives
Rental Housing
Co-operatives
These are typically state funded housing developments
designed to provide housing and associated supports to
persons in housing need. In Rental Housing Co-ops the
Tenants are Members and Shareholders of the
Co-operative. This means that the upkeep and care of
their housing and communities is shared among
members.
Home Ownership Building
Co-operatives
These are group schemes of dwellings for purchase and
ownership by members who have both the desire and
financial capability to buy their dwelling. In these
schemes members can reduce site and building costs by
working together as part of a shared development.
In Co-ownership Housing Co-operatives both the
individual members and the co-operative have specified
levels of  ownership in a dwelling. Co-ownership allows
members to get a foothold on the property ladder without
the full financial burden. A management system is put in
place for common areas and responsibilities.
