Galway Co-operative Housing Development Society Ltd. currently comprises three Rental Housing Co-operatives in Galway City.
What are Co-op Values
What are Co-op Principles
Open & Voluntary Membership
Co-ops are open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership. Co-ops do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnic origin, gender, sexuality, religion, age, political persuasion, or disability. People themselves decide whether or not co-operative housing responds to their needs. When people join a co-op they voluntarily commit to the responsibilities of membership
Co-ops are controlled by their members who, acting together, set policy, make decisions and elect committees who govern the co-op on their behalf. These committees are accountable to the membership. Democratic control of housing co-operatives is enhanced by the full sharing of information and the provision of equal opportunities for involvement.
All co-op members equitably contribute to the capital of their co-ops. This means that members are shareholders in the co-op.
Co-ops are controlled by their members and any agreements they enter into with outside agencies, including government, should leave the members in control of their co-op.
Co-ops provide learning opportunities for members and staff to support their further contribution to the development of their co-ops. They also try to inform the wider community about the nature and benefits of co-ops.
Co-ops recognise the benefits in sharing knowledge and experience with other co-ops and in collaborating towards reaching shared objectives
Co-ops care for and work towards the sustainable development of their communities.
In addition to the above Co-operative Principles and Values Galway Co-operative Housing commits itself to meeting members needs for affordable, good quality housing, security of tenure and for safe and secure communities. We seek to provide the best possible service at a fair cost.
Housing Co-ops exist for the mutual benefit of members and are based on the values of individual responsibility, mutual help, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. These reflect the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. |
